Kerala Nadan Chicken Curry Recipe – Traditional Spicy Gravy

Kerala Nadan Chicken Curry served with rice and garnished with curry leaves

Ingredients:

  • 500g chicken (with bone)
  • 2 onions (sliced)
  • 2 tomatoes (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • Curry leaves – a handful
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Roast and grind coconut: Dry roast grated coconut until golden brown. Add fennel seeds and grind to a paste. Set aside.
  2. Sauté onions: In a heavy pan, heat coconut oil. Add onions and curry leaves. Sauté until golden.
  3. Add ginger garlic paste: Cook for 2–3 minutes until raw smell goes away.
  4. Spice it up: Add turmeric, chili powder, coriander powder. Cook on low flame for 2 mins.
  5. Add tomatoes: Cook until soft and mashed.
  6. Add chicken: Mix chicken pieces. Add salt. Sauté until color changes.
  7. Add ground coconut paste: Stir well and add 1.5 cups water. Cover and cook for 25–30 minutes.
  8. Finish with garam masala: Add garam masala and cook uncovered till thick. Adjust salt and spice.
  9. Garnish and serve: Add fresh curry leaves on top and serve hot.

Serving Ideas:

  • Best with Kerala appam, rice, chapati, or parotta.
  • Let it rest 30 minutes before serving for deeper flavor.
